The first area for world leaders to tackle is transportation. This is the fastest growing area of carbon emissions because of rapid increase in numbers of automobiles and trucks. Many of the technologies necessary to drastically reduce emissions are now available, and can be implemented quickly. The U.S., for example, has doubled the mileage requirement for the fleet of American-made autos (including foreign nameplates with U.S. factories) from 27 to 54 miles per gallon by 2025.
